A new survey has revealed some of the most surprising things left behind at the end of a hotel stay – things the average traveler would probably never consider bringing with them.
As part of an industry report compiled by Hotels.com, the third-party booking engine asked properties for their favorite lost and found finds — with one-third of hotels responding that guests leave items behind in at least 25% of the stays.
“Our memories are tied to particular contexts,” UC Davis Professor Charan Ranganath, author of Why We Remember, told Hotels.com.
“Vacations are relaxing because they take you out of the routine and stimulate curiosity. But it can make you a little less likely to follow your good habits, like exercising or remembering your wallet,” the expert explained.
Phone chargers and power banks, clothes, adapters, make-up and toiletries and underwear are the souvenirs most often left behind for housekeepers as travelers pack their rooms.
Forgotten accessories aren’t usually too surprising, but they shocked the staff when they’re worth more than most people’s homes.
Ritzy travelers have left behind an engagement ring, an Hermès Birkin bag and a $6 million watch, innkeepers have revealed.
Stacks of cash and keys and papers for a luxury car were also a startling glimpse into how the other half lives.
What shocked a cleaning crew even more was entering a room with abandoned pets.
A baby chick and a pet lizard were found — and eventually reunited with their family — after their owner ran away.
Staff also had questions about how people got out leaving behind two full leg casts.
Other items left behind raised questions about why they were in the room at all – notably a rice cooker, car tire, blender and construction pipes.
A supposedly clean man even left his broom behind in a business hotel.
Fortunately, innkeepers try to accommodate travelers and usually do their best to reunite guests with the belongings left behind.
An incredibly dedicated team member at Hotel Victoria Ejecutivo in Guadalajara, Mexico followed a guest on a motorcycle to return a passport.
To help travelers remember everything they’ve packed, Ranganath suggests going through the packs in your head before the trip officially ends to prepare.
“Put yourself in that mindset and then go through a mental checklist of all the things you need to capture,” he advised.
“And then imagine yourself packing or picking up each of those things one at a time. The mental simulation will help you remember things when it’s time to check out.”
